What professionals offer skin cancer excision?

A diagnosis of skin cancer can be extremely scary. Fortunately, early detection and proper skin cancer removal techniques allow many patients to recover and experience remission. At Current Dermatology and Cosmetic Center of Annapolis, Maryland, Drs. Molly Walterhoefer and Megan Casady Flahive, our board-certified dermatologists, provide screenings, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer for patients in and around the community.

What skin cancer removal options are available?

In most cases, skin cancer excision is the most desirable option. It eliminates the cancer from the body while allowing healthy skin to remain. This lessens the damage to the treated area and reduces the chances of disfigurement. Patients with cancer in highly visible areas of the body, such as the face and hands, may be candidates for Mohs micrographic surgery, a specialized technique for removing cancer from the skin in the most conservative manner.

What else can be done to treat skin cancer outside of skin cancer excision?

In some cases, radiation therapy may be an option. This type of treatment uses high-energy x-rays or particles to kill cancer cells by destroying their DNA. Immunotherapy, which is the use of medications that encourage one’s own immune system to fight cancer, is also an option for certain types of skin cancer. Photodynamic therapy, chemotherapy, topical ointments, and certain medications may also be recommended depending on the size, stage, and kind of cancer found.

Be sure to schedule regular skin cancer screenings!

By having regular skin cancer screenings, skin cancer can be caught in its early stages, allowing for conservative treatment methods to address it. This may include topical ointments or surgical removal depending on the type and severity of cancer found. It is easier to treat skin cancer when it is found earlier and caught before it has had time to spread or worsen.
