Why should I have regular full-body skin cancer screenings?

Annapolis, Maryland, patients should be diligent about regularly checking their skin for the early detection of skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of few cancers that can be spotted physically in its first stages, allowing patients to successfully eradicate cancer before it becomes a more serious problem. This, in turn, significantly improves the chances of survival when compared to other types of cancers that can impact the body.

What can be done if skin cancer is found?

If an area of concern is spotted, Drs. Walterhoefer or Flahive will perform a biopsy, removing a small sample of the area and sending it to a laboratory for further evaluation.

How often should I have skin cancer screenings?

Our board-certified dermatologists encourage you to have regular skin cancer screenings at least once a year to monitor for any changes that might be indicative of cancer. Patients with a history of precancerous or cancerous skin lesions are usually seen more often than once a year. We work with your individual history to determine the correct schedule for you.

What should I do if I notice a new spot before my next appointment?

It is important to remember that even if you have had a screening before, skin cancer can still develop between these checks. If you notice any changes in your skin (such as discolored patches or sores that don’t heal), it is important to see a doctor right away so they can check for the presence of any abnormal lesions. Early skin cancer detection dramatically increases survival rates, so being proactive about it protects your health!
