AviClear® may be the clear choice to finally get your moderate to severe acne under control when myriad products don’t live up to their hype, or you cannot achieve lasting clearance with topical/oral medications. The first and only energy-based device designed for inflammatory acne, the AviClear® laser treats this common condition at its source: the oil-producing sebaceous glands. After an initial series of sessions, you can enjoy clearer skin for up to two years until “touch-ups” are needed to manage the frequency and severity of breakouts, and we’re pleased to provide you with six more facts about this innovative system.
Our team in Annapolis, Maryland, carefully selects every product, technique, and technology for its clinical safety and efficacy. Drs Molly Walterhoefer and Megan Casady Flahive quickly discovered that this is a revolutionary laser-/energy-assisted approach to treating the underlying cause of acne. It also complements our fundamental approach of investing in only the latest and greatest technologies to support an effective, comfortable, convenient, and safe treatment experience.
It’s important to follow any instructions before treatment. This pre-care may include avoiding irritating skincare products for a few days and any self-tanners that can interfere with the treatment. As a light-based treatment, you may also need to remove any excess hair at the treatment site for the best results and to support a safe experience. Your face will be thoroughly cleansed once you arrive at our office, and we will apply wet gauze pads. These pads help with AviClear’s built-in cooling mechanisms (AviCool™) to ensure comfort and safety throughout treatment. The laser is then directed toward the skin and activated. We may need to pass over areas with more severe acne two times, whereas with other areas, one pass by the laser may be sufficient.
Before you leave our office, we will apply a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. It’s important to continue to use sunscreen daily and to practice sun avoidance measures, too, because laser treatments are associated with photosensitivity and increased risk of damage from UV exposure. It’s not unusual to initially feel and see some inflammation and swelling, which can be relieved with cold compresses/cold packs. We recommend gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Heat is not your friend. So, do not take hot showers, baths, or saunas for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment.
Every patient is different. According to AviClear® ‘s manufacturers, a typical treatment series consists of three 30-minute sessions separated by four to six weeks. Of those treated with AviClear®, 92% resolved at least half of their acne 12 months after their initial treatment. Due to how AviClear® selectively targets and damages the sebaceous glands’ ability to produce oil, the results from treatment continue to get better even several months after treatment has been completed. These results are generally long-lasting, even for stubborn and severe deep nodules. Future breakouts tend to be shorter and less severe, with fewer and more minor lesions.
